FFMI URGES SENATE TO PRIORITIZE NOMINATION OF ALVARO BEDOYA TO THE FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION

Amazon’s MGM Deal Is A Reminder For Senators That Remaining FTC Slot Must Be Filled

The Free & Fair Markets Initiative (FFMI) today released the following statement urging the Senate to confirm President Biden’s nominee for the fifth seat of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Georgetown University law professor Alvaro Bedoya:

“FFMI urges the Senate to immediately confirm Alvaro Bedoya to the FTC and fill its remaining vacant seat to ensure the Commission is fully equipped to protect American consumers and small businesses from anti-competitive practices — particularly at a time when Big Tech giants continue to amass unparalleled economic and financial power.

The recent news that the FTC will not challenge Amazon’s multibillion-dollar acquisition of MGM Studios over antitrust concerns is yet another reminder of why Americans need the Commission to serve as a vital bulwark against predatory and monopolistic actions that limit consumer choice and fair competition.

These are common-sense, bipartisan goals that all senators should support. It’s time for the Senate to put politics aside and stand with American consumers and small businesses by confirming Mr. Bedoya to the FTC.”
