AMAZON PARTNERED WITH FACEBOOK TO EXPLOIT CONSUMER’S DATA IN POTENTIALLY ILLEGAL ACTIVITY

Shot: Federal investigators looking into how Amazon worked with Facebook to potentially exploit consumer data.

“Federal prosecutors are conducting a criminal investigation into data deals Facebook struck with some of the world’s largest technology companies, intensifying scrutiny of the social media giant’s business practices as it seeks to rebound from a year of scandal and setbacks…The companies were among more than 150, including Amazon…that had cut sharing deals with the world’s dominant social media platform.” (The New York Times, “Facebook’s Data Deals Are Under Criminal Investigation,” Michael LaForgia, Matthew Rosenberg and Gabriel J.X. Dance, 3.13.19)

Chaser: House antitrust subcommittee chair David Cicilline (D-R.I.) is calling for an investigation into big tech companies for “pattern of anticompetitive conduct.”

“American antitrust agencies have not pursued a significant monopoly case in more than two decades, even as corporate concentration and monopoly power have reached historic levels. It’s clear that serious enforcement is long overdue.” (The New York Times, “The Case for Investigating Facebook,” David Cicilline, 3.19.19)
